Suffering, Comfort & God's Love
Suffering, Comfort &
God’s Love
Jesus wept. (John
11:35 [KJV])
My brethren, count
it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that
the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her
perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.
(James 1:2-4 [KJV]
Blessed is the man
that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the
crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.
(James 1:12 [KJV]
For I reckon that
the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared
with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans 8:18 [KJV]
Beloved, think it
not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though
some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are
partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be
revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy. If ye be reproached
for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of
God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your
part he is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as
a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s
matters. Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be
ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time is come
that judgement must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin
at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?
And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and
the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the
will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing,
as unto a faithful Creator. (I Peter 4:12-19 [KJV]
We are troubled on
every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;
Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; Always
bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life
also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. For which cause we
faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is
renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a
moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of
glory; While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the
things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are
temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. (II
Corinthians 4: 8-10, 16-18 [KJV]
And we know that all
things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are
the called according to his purpose. (Romans 8:28 [KJV])
When thou passest
through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they
shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou
shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.
(Isaiah 43:2 [KJV])
Many are the
afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them
all. (Psalms 34:19 [KJV])
And whosoever doth
not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple. (Luke
14:27 [KJV]
There hath no
temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is
faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are
able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye
may be able to bear it. (I Corinthians 10:13 [KJV]
For whom the Lord
loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
(Hebrews 12:6 [KJV]
Now no chastening
for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless
afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them
which are exercised thereby. (Hebrews 12:11 [KJV])
It is good for me
that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes. (Psalms
119:71 [KJV])
That I may know him,
and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his
sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; (Philippians 3:10
[KJV]
For this is
thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief,
suffering wrongfully. For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted
for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well,
and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God.
For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for
us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps: (I Peter
2:19-21 [KJV])
For as the heavens
are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and
my thoughts than your thoughts. (Isaiah 55:9 [KJV]
And lest I should be
exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there
was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to
buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I
besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said
unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made
perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my
infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Therefore I
take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in
persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak,
then am I strong. (II Corinthians 12:7-10 [KJV])
Bear ye one
another’s burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2
[KJV]
For he hath not
despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; neither hath
he hid his face from him; but when he cried unto him, he heard.
(Psalms 22:24 [KJV])
But and if ye suffer
for righteousness’ sake, happy are ye: and be not afraid of their
terror, neither be troubled; (I Peter 3:14 [KJV])
Knowing this, that
the trying of your faith worketh patience. (James 1:3 [KJV]
Fear none of those
things which thou shalt suffer: behold, the devil shall cast some of
you into prison, that ye may be tried; and ye shall have tribulation
ten days: be thou faithful unto death, and I will give thee a crown
of life. (Revelation of John 2:10 [KJV]
And if children,
then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that
we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. For I
reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be
compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Romans
8:17-18 [KJV]
Behold, my servant
shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very
high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more
than any man, and his form more than the sons of men: So shall he
sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for
that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they
had not heard shall they consider. (Isaiah 52:13-15 [KJV]
Who hath believed
our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed? For he shall
grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry
ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him,
there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and
rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we
hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed
him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows:
yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. But he
was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our
iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his
stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have
turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the
iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he
opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and
as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his
generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the
transgression of my people was he stricken. And he made his grave
with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done
no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the
LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make
his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong
his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand. He
shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his
knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear
their iniquities. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the
great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath
poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the
transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for
the transgressors. (Isaiah 53:1-12 [KJV])
In the day of
prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also
hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should
find nothing after him. (Ecclesiastes 7:14 [KJV])
For it became him,
for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many
sons unto glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect
through sufferings. (Hebrews 2:10 [KJV]
He delivereth the
poor in his affliction, and openeth their ears in oppression. (Job
36:15 [KJV]
Be careful for
nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace
of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and
minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7 [KJV])
LORD, how are they
increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me.
Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God.
Selah. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the
lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he
heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I
awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten
thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about.
Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine
enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the
ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy
people. Selah. (Psalms 3:1-8 [KJV]
He that dwelleth in
the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the
Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my
God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare
of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee
with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth
shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the
terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the
pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that
wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten
thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only
with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most
High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall
any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels
charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee
up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou
shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon
shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me,
therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath
known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will
be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long
life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. (Psalms 91:1-16
[KJV]
Blessed be God, even
the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the
God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we
may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort
wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. For as the sufferings of
Christ abound in us, so our consolation also aboundeth by Christ. And
whether we be afflicted, it is for your consolation and salvation,
which is effectual in the enduring of the same sufferings which we
also suffer: or whether we be comforted, it is for your consolation
and salvation. And our hope of you is stedfast, knowing, that as ye
are partakers of the sufferings, so shall ye be also of the
consolation. (II Corinthians 1:3-7 [KJV]
Come unto me, all ye
that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my
yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and
ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 [KJV]
And seeing the
multitudes, he went up into a mountain: and when he was set, his
disciples came unto him: And he opened his mouth, and taught them,
saying, Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are
they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall
be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. Blessed are
the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness’ sake: for
theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall
revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil
against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for
great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets
which were before you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt
have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth
good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of
men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill
cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a
bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are
in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see
your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. Think
not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come
to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and
earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law,
till all be fulfilled. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these
least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the
least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach
them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. For I
say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the
righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter
into the kingdom of heaven. Ye have heard that it was said by them of
old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in
danger of the judgment: But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry
with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment:
and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of
the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger
of hell fire. Therefore if thou bring thy gift to the altar, and
there rememberest that thy brother hath ought against thee; Leave
there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way; first be reconciled
to thy brother, and then come and offer thy gift. Agree with thine
adversary quickly, whiles thou art in the way with him; lest at any
time the adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver
thee to the officer, and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto
thee, Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou hast paid the
uttermost farthing. Ye have heard that it was said by them of old
time, Thou shalt not commit adultery: But I say unto you, That
whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed
adultery with her already in his heart. And if thy right eye offend
thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for
thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole
body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut
it off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one
of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be
cast into hell. It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife,
let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That
whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of
fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall
marry her that is divorced committeth adultery. Again, ye have heard
that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear
thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths: But I say unto
you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne:
Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for
it is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy
head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black. But let
your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more
than these cometh of evil. Ye have heard that it hath been said, An
eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye
resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek,
turn to him the other also. And if any man will sue thee at the law,
and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever
shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. Give to him that
asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou
away. Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your
enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That
ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he
maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain
on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you,
what reward have ye? do not even the publicans the same? And if ye
salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? do not even
the publicans so? Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which
is in heaven is perfect. (Matthew 5:1-48 [KJV])
The LORD is my
shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green
pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my
soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s
sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I
will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they
comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine
enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely
goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I
will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. (Psalms 23:1-6 [KJV]
Remember the word
unto thy servant, upon which thou hast caused me to hope. This is my
comfort in my affliction: for thy word hath quickened me. The proud
have had me greatly in derision: yet have I not declined from thy
law. (Psalms 119:49-51 [KJV])
Let, I pray thee,
thy merciful kindness be for my comfort, according to thy word unto
thy servant. Let thy tender mercies come unto me, that I may live:
for thy law is my delight. (Psalms 119:76-77 [KJV]
Sing, O heavens; and
be joyful, O earth; and break forth into singing, O mountains: for
the LORD hath comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his
afflicted. (Isaiah 49:13 [KJV]
And ye now therefore
have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice,
and your joy no man taketh from you. (John 16:22 [KJV]
I, even I, am he
that comforteth you: who art thou, that thou shouldest be afraid of a
man that shall die, and of the son of man which shall be made as
grass; (Isaiah 51:12 [KJV]
I will love thee, O
LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my
deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and
the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the
LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine
enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly
men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the
snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD,
and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my
cry came before him, even into his ears. Then the earth shook and
trembled; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken,
because he was wroth. There went up a smoke out of his nostrils, and
fire out of his mouth devoured: coals were kindled by it. He bowed
the heavens also, and came down: and darkness was under his feet. And
he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of
the wind. He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about
him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. At the brightness
that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of
fire. The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave
his voice; hail stones and coals of fire. Yea, he sent out his
arrows, and scattered them; and he shot out lightnings, and
discomfited them. Then the channels of waters were seen, and the
foundations of the world were discovered at thy rebuke, O LORD, at
the blast of the breath of thy nostrils. He sent from above, he took
me, he drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong
enemy, and from them which hated me: for they were too strong for me.
They prevented me in the day of my calamity: but the LORD was my
stay. He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me,
because he delighted in me. The LORD rewarded me according to my
righteousness; according to the cleanness of my hands hath he
recompensed me. For I have kept the ways of the LORD, and have not
wickedly departed from my God. For all his judgments were before me,
and I did not put away his statutes from me. I was also upright
before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity. Therefore hath the
LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the
cleanness of my hands in his eyesight. With the merciful thou wilt
shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt shew thyself
upright; With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; and with the
froward thou wilt shew thyself froward. For thou wilt save the
afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. For thou wilt light
my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness. For by thee I
have run through a troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall. As
for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a
buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the LORD?
or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with
strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’
feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to
war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also
given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden
me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. Thou hast enlarged my
steps under me, that my feet did not slip. I have pursued mine
enemies, and overtaken them: neither did I turn again till they were
consumed. I have wounded them that they were not able to rise: they
are fallen under my feet. For thou hast girded me with strength unto
the battle: thou hast subdued under me those that rose up against me.
Thou hast also given me the necks of mine enemies; that I might
destroy them that hate me. They cried, but there was none to save
them: even unto the LORD, but he answered them not. Then did I beat
them small as the dust before the wind: I did cast them out as the
dirt in the streets. Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the
people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom
I have not known shall serve me. As soon as they hear of me, they
shall obey me: the strangers shall submit themselves unto me. The
strangers shall fade away, and be afraid out of their close places.
The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my
salvation be exalted. It is God that avengeth me, and subdueth the
people under me. He delivereth me from mine enemies: yea, thou
liftest me up above those that rise up against me: thou hast
delivered me from the violent man. Therefore will I give thanks unto
thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
Great deliverance giveth he to his king; and sheweth mercy to his
anointed, to David, and to his seed for evermore. (Psalms 18:1-50
[KJV])
Behold, the Lord GOD
will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold,
his reward is with him, and his work before him. He shall feed his
flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with his arm, and
carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with
young. (Isaiah 40:10-11 [KJV]
Hast thou not known?
hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator
of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no
searching of his understanding. He giveth power to the faint; and to
them that have no might he increaseth strength. Even the youths shall
faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall: But they
that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount
up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they
shall walk, and not faint. (Isaiah 40:28-31 [KJV])
But the God of all
grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus,
after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish,
strengthen, settle you. (I Peter 5:10 [KJV])
And I will pray the
Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide
with you for ever; Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot
receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know
him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not leave
you comfortless: I will come to you. (John 14:16-18 [KJV]
He healeth the
broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. (Psalms 147:3 [KJV]
In thee, O LORD, do
I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in thy
righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and
save me. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually
resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock
and my fortress. Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked,
out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man. For thou art my
hope, O Lord GOD: thou art my trust from my youth. By thee have I
been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my
mother’s bowels: my praise shall be continually of thee. I am as a
wonder unto many; but thou art my strong refuge. Let my mouth be
filled with thy praise and with thy honour all the day. Cast me not
off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul
take counsel together, Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and
take him; for there is none to deliver him. O God, be not far from
me: O my God, make haste for my help. Let them be confounded and
consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered with
reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt. But I will hope
continually, and will yet praise thee more and more. My mouth shall
shew forth thy righteousness and thy salvation all the day; for I
know not the numbers thereof. I will go in the strength of the Lord
GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, even of thine only. O
God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared
thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God,
forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this
generation, and thy power to every one that is to come. Thy
righteousness also, O God, is very high, who hast done great things:
O God, who is like unto thee! Thou, which hast shewed me great and
sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again
from the depths of the earth. Thou shalt increase my greatness, and
comfort me on every side. I will also praise thee with the psaltery,
even thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou
Holy One of Israel. My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto
thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed. My tongue also shall
talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded,
for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt. (Psalms 71:1-24
[KJV])
Let no man seek his
own (only), but every man also (the profit) of his neighbour. (I
Corinthians 10:24 [Etheridge]
Thou tellest my
wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy
book? (Psalms 56:8 [KJV])
Beloved, let us love
one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of
God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is
love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that
God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live
through him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved
us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if
God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. No man hath seen
God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his
love is perfected in us. Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he
in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit. (I John 4:7-13 [KJV])
And we have known
and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that
dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love
made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment:
because as he is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love;
but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that
feareth is not made perfect in love. We love him, because he first
loved us. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a
liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can
he love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from
him, That he who loveth God love his brother also. (I John 4:16-21
[KJV]
For God so loved the
world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth
in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not
his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world
through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not
condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he
hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. (John
3:16-18 [KJV])
These words spake
Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour
is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou
hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life
to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that
they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou
hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the
work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me
with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the
world was. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest
me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and
they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things
whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them
the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have
known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that
thou didst send me. I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but
for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine
are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I
am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to
thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast
given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in
the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have
kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the
scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these
things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in
themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated
them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the
world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but
that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the
world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy
truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even
so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I
sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the
truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall
believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou,
Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us:
that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory
which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as
we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect
in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast
loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will that they also,
whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold
my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the
foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world hath not known
thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent
me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that
the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.
(John 17:1-26 [KJV])
And not only so, but
we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh
patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope
maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our
hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us. For when we were yet
without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For
scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a
good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love
toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
(Romans 5:3-8 [KJV]
But God, who is rich
in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were
dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye
are saved;) (Ephesians 2:4-5 [KJV])
I am crucified with
Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and
the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son
of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 [KJV])
A new commandment I
give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye
also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my
disciples, if ye have love one to another. (John 13:34-35 [KJV])
Behold, what manner
of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called
the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew
him not. (I John 3:1 [KJV]
As the Father hath
loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. If ye keep my
commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my
Father’s commandments, and abide in his love. These things have I
spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy
might be full. This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I
have loved you. Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay
down his life for his friends. Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever
I command you. Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant
knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for
all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.
Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that
ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should
remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may
give it you. These things I command you, that ye love one another.
(John 15:9-17 [KJV]
Know therefore that
the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant
and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a
thousand generations; (Deuteronomy 7:9 [KJV])
And above all these
things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. And let the
peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in
one body; and be ye thankful. (Colossians 3:14-15 [KJV]
But the fruit of the
Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness,
faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians
5:22-23 [KJV]
That he would grant
you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with
might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your
hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be
able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length,
and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth
knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. Now
unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we
ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, Unto him be
glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world
without end. Amen. (Ephesians 3:16-21 [KJV]
And above all things
have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the
multitude of sins. Use hospitality one to another without grudging.
As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to
another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. (I Peter
4:8-10 [KJV])
The LORD thy God in
the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee
with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with
singing. (Zephaniah 3:17 [KJV]
If ye love me, keep
my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you
another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; Even the
Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him
not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you,
and shall be in you. I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to
you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see
me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know
that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my
commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that
loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will
manifest myself to him. (John 14:15-21 [KJV])
The LORD hath
appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an
everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee.
(Jeremiah 31:3 [KJV])
Humble yourselves
therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due
time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. (I Peter
5:6-7 [KJV])
But thou, O Lord,
art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and
plenteous in mercy and truth. O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me;
give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine
handmaid. (Psalms 86:15-16 [KJV]
Nay, in all these
things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I
am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor
principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to
separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
(Romans 8:37-39 [KJV])
Though I speak with
the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become
as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift
of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and
though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have
not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed
the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not
charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is
kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed
up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not
easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but
rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things,
hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but
whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be
tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall
vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when
that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be
done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a
child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away
childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then
face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also
I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but
the greatest of these is charity. (I Corinthians 13:1-13 [KJV])
For the Father
himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that
I came out from God. (John 16:27 [KJV]
For this is the love
of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not
grievous. For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and
this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith. Who is
he that overcometh the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the
Son of God? (I John 5:3-5 [KJV]
Hereby perceive we
the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought
to lay down our lives for the brethren. (I John 3:16 [KJV])
Blessed be the God
and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all
spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he
hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we
should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having
predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to
himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of
the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the
beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; Wherein he
hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence; Having made known
unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which
he hath purposed in himself: That in the dispensation of the fulness
of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both
which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him: In whom
also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according
to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his
own will: That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first
trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the
word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that
ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which
is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the
purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:3-14
[KJV]
Owe no man any
thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath
fulfilled the law. For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou
shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false
witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if there be any other commandment,
it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love
thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour:
therefore love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10 [KJV]
Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy
soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment.
And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as
thyself. (Matthew 22:37-39 [KJV]
A friend loveth at
all times, and a brother is born for adversity. (Proverbs 17:17 [KJV]
Hatred stirreth up
strifes: but love covereth all sins. (Proverbs 10:12 [KJV])
Thou shalt not hate
thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy
neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him. Thou shalt not avenge, nor
bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt
love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. (Leviticus 19:17-18
[KJV]
This then is the
message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is
light, and in him is no darkness at all. (I John 1:5 [KJV])
His Mercy Endureth
Forever!
O give thanks unto
the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give
thanks unto the God of gods: for his mercy endureth for ever. O give
thanks to the Lord of lords: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him
who alone doeth great wonders: for his mercy endureth for ever. To
him that by wisdom made the heavens: for his mercy endureth for ever.
To him that stretched out the earth above the waters: for his mercy
endureth for ever. To him that made great lights: for his mercy
endureth for ever: The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for
ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for
ever. To him that smote Egypt in their firstborn: for his mercy
endureth for ever: And brought out Israel from among them: for his
mercy endureth for ever: With a strong hand, and with a stretched out
arm: for his mercy endureth for ever. To him which divided the Red
sea into parts: for his mercy endureth for ever: And made Israel to
pass through the midst of it: for his mercy endureth for ever: But
overthrew Pharaoh and his host in the Red sea: for his mercy endureth
for ever. To him which led his people through the wilderness: for his
mercy endureth for ever. To him which smote great kings: for his
mercy endureth for ever: And slew famous kings: for his mercy
endureth for ever: Sihon king of the Amorites: for his mercy endureth
for ever: And Og the king of Bashan: for his mercy endureth for ever:
And gave their land for an heritage: for his mercy endureth for ever:
Even an heritage unto Israel his servant: for his mercy endureth for
ever. Who remembered us in our low estate: for his mercy endureth for
ever: And hath redeemed us from our enemies: for his mercy endureth
for ever. Who giveth food to all flesh: for his mercy endureth for
ever. O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy endureth
for ever. (Psalms 136:1-26 [KJV])
With all lowliness
and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love;
(Ephesians 4:2 [KJV])
And they shall be
mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels;
and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.
(Malachi 3:17 [KJV]
Finally, brethren,
farewell. Be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in
peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you. (II
Corinthians 13:11 [KJV]
Let love be without
dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is
good. Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in
honour preferring one another; (Romans 12:9-10 [KJV])
For I the LORD thy
God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help
thee. (Isaiah 41:13 [KJV]
Every good gift and
every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of
lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
(James 1:17 [KJV])
And that we may be
delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not
faith. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you
from evil. And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye
both do and will do the things which we command you. And the Lord
direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patient waiting
for Christ. (II Thessalonians 3:2-5 [KJV]
For I know the
thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace,
and not of evil, to give you an expected end. Then shall ye call upon
me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with
all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: and I
will turn away your captivity, and I will gather you from all the
nations, and from all the places whither I have driven you, saith the
LORD; and I will bring you again into the place whence I caused you
to be carried away captive. (Jeremiah 29:11-14 [KJV]
For the mountains
shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not
depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed,
saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee. (Isaiah 54:10 [KJV]
Can a woman forget
her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of
her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee. Behold, I
have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are
continually before me. (Isaiah 49:15-16 [KJV])
Set me as a seal
upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as
death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of
fire, which hath a most vehement flame. Many waters cannot quench
love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the
substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned. (Song
of Solomon 8:6-7 [KJV]
Help me, O LORD my
God: O save me according to thy mercy: (Psalms 109:26 [KJV]
Give thanks unto the
LORD, call upon his name, make known his deeds among the people. Sing
unto him, sing psalms unto him, talk ye of all his wondrous works.
Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek
the LORD. Seek the LORD and his strength, seek his face continually.
Remember his marvellous works that he hath done, his wonders, and the
judgments of his mouth; (I Chronicles 16:8-12 [KJV])
But ye, beloved,
building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy
Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of
our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some have compassion,
making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of
the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now unto him
that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless
before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise
God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now
and ever. Amen. (Jude 1:20-25 [KJV]
And God shall wipe
away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death,
neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for
the former things are passed away. (Revelation of John 21:4 [KJV]
And the God of peace
shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord
Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. (Romans 16:20 [KJV]
